Ford has announced production of the 2011 Shelby GT500 will be limited to 5,500 units.

While this isn’t terribly surprising, initial sales have exceeded expectations. So far, dealers have logged more than 3,300 orders for the extreme muscle car.

According to Fritz Wilke, Mustang brand manager, “We are pleased with the pace of retail orders for the 2011 Shelby GT500. The car continues to be popular with sports car enthusiasts and collectors who are blown away by the increase in horsepower and performance. The limited production of the 2011 should make this year even more desirable.”

As we have previously reported, the Shelby GT500 features a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 with 550 hp (410kW / 558 PS) and 510 ft-lb (691 Nm) of torque. While it comes nicely equipped, options include a glass roof (for the coupe), an Electronics Package (with voice-activated navigation, SIRIUS Travel Link, HD Radio and dual-zone climate control), and an SVT Performance Package with Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 tires, lightweight wheels, a higher rear axle gear ratio, stiffer springs / dampers, and a lowered ride height.
