There was news sometime back that the legendary American motor company Harley-Davidson was working on leaning three wheeler automobiles for a past few years. It has now become apparent that the company has gone to the extent of producing a few prototypes of the designs that are codenamed as Penster.

The three wheeled trikes were designed by the famous custom car craftsman John Butter. Though the designs that found their way into the web, looked awkward in their appearance, the prototype of Penster looks pretty good. Going by the attractive looks of the Penster, it seems quite puzzling why the trikes were not approved for production by the auto giant. Keeping in mind that the concept of three wheelers of the likes of the Penster proto has received quite a huge popularity in the past, Harley-Davidson must be having its own strong reason to restrain the production of the same. The well accepted Piaggio MP3 series of scooters, still holding a good position in the market is a good example of the viability of three wheeler product. Harley –Davidson has already made itself an active player in the trike market with Tri-Glide Ultra Classic, which is the first ever factory –trike. With the Penster trike designs never released for production , the Harley lovers looking for three wheelers will have to be content with the Tri-Glide itself.

Looking at the prototype model of the Penster, it is clear that it makes use of the 45 degree air cooled Twin engine for getting the power to propel. Further details about the exact mechanism of the vehicle are not made public. The prototypes were shaped in the year 2006 and are currently placed in the Harley-Davidson museum. Being an example of emerging mindset by a company which acts traditionally, it is bound to attract a lot of admirers.
