General motors is trying to attract the attention of the buyers by announcing the price of the 38mpg/highway Eco model starting at $25,995 which includes a destination charge of $760. Inspite of announcing the price, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is not scheduled to hit the showrooms before the first quarter in 2012. Malibu is billed as the most fuel efficient ever and the Eco is referred to be the first Chevy which will feature GM’s eAssist hybrid technology that will be utilising a battery of lithium ion and an electric motor generator in order to enable regenerative braking, start-stop functioning and electric assist. It is attached to a 2.4 liter Ecotec engine of four-cylinder and a six speed automatic transmission. This will produce an amount of 180 HP but during heavy acceleration from eAssist system it will be receiving up to 15 more HP. This new model is a mid size sedan which is a fuel efficient variant of the new Malibu.

Although the formal EPA figures are not yet disclosed but it is estimated that the new model will deliver upto 26 mpg in city and 38 mpg on the highways. The Eco will be the first model of the Malibu series that is to be launched in the United States with the trim levels LT, LS and LTZ powered by 2.5 liter Ecotec engine with 169 Hp to appear in the next summer. GM has also mentioned some of its competitors but with a higher price. Those models are revealed as 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Volkswagen Passat TDI SE Diesel and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The new model is priced under its rivals who use hybrid or diesel technology for improving fuel technology. For more details we have to wait till the model is launched in the market.
