As admitted by Volvo, the XC90 was a latecomer in the SUV market, almost 5 years after the launch ofMercedes Benz M class and three years after the BMW X5 was launched. Although the XC90 is a latecomer, yet Volvo claims that it is the most valuable product in Sweden selling 85000 units and bringing about US $6.2 billion in peak years. The US is recorded as the number one market with selling 38,800 units in 2004 and in 2005 it was 36,200.

Although the Volvo’s SUV has been updated thrice in 2007, 2009 and in 2011, but in nine years the competition has moved ahead. In the mean time the Swedish company is sold to Geely, which is at present developing the replacement for XC90. So the second generation model is bound to be a latecomer as it is at the first stage of its development. This model will not appear in the market till 2014. It was just before the auto show at LA that Car and Driver visited the California’s design studio. The Swedish company had nothing to show except the concept You example.

There a magazine that outlines design proposal for the new model got a sneak peak. One front shot incorporates the new face as previewed by the concept you. The other images are rear sketches that vary from each other in minute details starting from the tail lamps to the size and the angle of the C pillar.

It has not yet been disclosed which among the four is closest to get the green light but it has been announced that the new model will be the first to use the new Architecture platform along with the kinetic energy recovery system. The officials of the Swedish company have also told the magazine that the 2014 model will consist of four cylinder units.
