A few details of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat has come to the forefront. As per Auto Motor and Sport, this new model will travel on the MQB platform underpinning the Audi A3 and the redesigned Golf. This would enable the Passat to weigh about 1400 kg which is equivalent to 3086 lbs. In addition, platform sharing will lower the cost, so the car would be equipped with more standard features which would include ipod connectivity, infotainment system and Bluetooth. Various diesel engines meeting the Euro 6 emission standard can be expected. On the other hand, petrol engine will have cylinder deactivation system and a start/stop system. A turbocharged 2.5 liter five cylinder would be replacing the 3.6 liter V6 engine which is not yet officially announced.

It is also heard about a plug in hybrid variant associated with an electric motor, 1.4 liter TSI petrol engine and a battery of lithium ion which will enable the model to give an output of 170 PS and will travel up to 50 km only on electricity.
