Chevrolet will be making 69 COPO Camaros for this year itself, and would be the first purpose built model of the brand, drag racing speciality car which is designed to compete with the super fast Super Stock classes and NHRA’s Stock Eliminator. This new model is supposed to be the quickest Camaro that is ever offered by the company. As per Jim Campbell, the vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports it is to shake up drag racing ranks during the summer months of 2012 and is to give Chevy fans a new cause to cheer on the Bowtie. The COPO builds up the strength which has helped the Camaro to be the best-selling car in America and when this was developed for drag strip, the new model was infused with similar performance lineage which is shared by all Camaros. COPO however, stands for Central Office Production Order. The new models will be made using body-in-white body frames that are produced at Oshawa where it manufactures the regular production models. The deliveries for this model will start by summer this year.

The highlights of this new model include three racing class engines which include a naturally aspirated 427 and two supercharged 327 V8 engines, a build number which is sequenced and matched the engine but is sold without a Vehicle Identification number and which can’t be recorded for use in Highways, engines available with a Powerglide automatic transmission which is designed for drag racing, available in five colour options Summit White, Flat black, Victory Red, Ashen Gray Metallic Orange Metallic and Chevy Racing Blue and Silver Ice Metallic, range starting at $89,000 and a collector’s package which offers to buy all three engines including the one that is installed in the car in the time of delivery with serial number of each engine matched to the car. This new model is designed to NHRA racing provisions which includes an axle and a full chrome roll cage. In the interior, most of the power accessories and standard sound deadening are deleted to optimise weight and in addition to it is added a pair of racing bucket seats, competition floor shifter, safety harness for its driver and Chevrolet Performance gauges.
