The Sprinter van has made Mercedes Benz the leader in the van segment in Western Europe. In 2005, Mercedes Benz entered into a mutually beneficial agreement with Volkswagen with a model changeover for the Sprinter. The contract is due to run till the end of 2016. By 2012, the plants at Dusseldorf and Ludwigsfeld have produced 280000 large vans. In 2012, this van captured 18.1% of the market share of vans in EU and the success rate is even greater in USA. The dual brand strategy where the van is sold as either a Mercedes Benz or Freightliner branded vehicle have caused this huge success which registered a gigantic leap of 19% in 2012.

Towards the end of 2013, the new model of the Sprinter was launched with a number of class leading features. the fuel efficiency is vastly superior to other similar models on road. Moreover, five new security systems have been incorporated in the van while the engine has been redesigned to comply with the Euro VI emission standards. The standard fit crosswind assist, the optional Collision Prevention assist and Blind Spot Assist are some of the important features which reduce the possibility of accidents.

The first half of the year has resulted in the sale of 122059 vans as compared to 120547 units in the previous year. However, Mercedes Benz plans to take the van global. As the mutually beneficial partnership with Volkswagen nears its end in 2016, the company does not plan to reissue it. Instead, it is opening manufacturing facilities in places like Argentina in 2007 and China in 2011. From July of 2013, it is also producing in partnership with the Russian company Gaz. In USA, it is manufactured from CKD units since 2010. Hence, Mercedes Benz is ready to go truly global with this van.
