Chevrolet has unveiled the Chevrolet SS. The first V-8 along with rear wheel drive performance sedan since the Impala in 1996, the car promises to deliver a power packed performance both on the street as well as on the track. The General Motors are not really saying it aloud, but the car will be sold in small numbers, around 5000 a year and is poised to have quite an impact on GM’s corporate image.

Powered by the LS3 Chevrolet V-8, the car delivers 415 bhp power and 415 lb – ft torque and is mated with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six speed automatic transmission that also has the option of being shifted manually using TAPshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. The car accelerates from 0 – 60 mph in about five seconds and is thus one of the quickest sedans in the market. The powertrain is complemented with a sport-tuned suspension, the font of which is MacPherson- strut based multi – link system with a direct acting stabilizing bar. The rear suspension is a multi link independent system with a decouple stabilizer bar and coil over shock absorbers. Braking system is in the form of standard four wheel disc brakes and track capable Brembo front brakes. Electric Brake Force Distribution is useful in optimizing the control of rear brake pressure on all road surfaces and under every vehicle loading condition. The steering system uses a variable assist electric power steering system (EPS) which saves fuel through drawing energy only when the wheels are turned. This leads to lighter parking efforts at low speeds and is calibrated to detect constant driver steering wheel load.

In design, one must say a good job has been done as the car’s design and style evokes good performance. In order to give the toughened look tio the vehicle, the front and rear wheels have been staggered and pushed out to the corners. In the front, the aluminium bulge gives a pronounced effect to a promising engine underneath while the tapered shape at the rear promises aerodynamic performance. There is a character line along the sides from the hood to the trunk lid, which gives a wedge shape and makes the car look muscular while bright dual exhaust tips accentuate the rear design. Finishes for the car come in five options – Silver Ice Metallic, red Hot 2, Phantom Black, Heron White and Mystic Green Metallic.

In case of interiors, the cabin is spacious enough to accommodate five adults comfortably with front leg room being 42.3 inches and rear legroom being 39.7 inches. Standard features include the leather seating, eight way power adjustable front bucket seats with additional side bolstering. The soft touch instrument panel features two types of chrome finishes – a satin gloss and bright chrome. Lighting is an icy blue ambient type of lighting. Infotainment, climate and other vehicle controls are all set together in an integrated center stack. The center console contains extra large dual cup holders and can be used for storing other items too. Park barke is electric, leading to more free space in the center console. There are two auxiliary power outlets for charging electronic devices, one located inside the covered central storage console and the other being conveniently accessible in the forward compartment at the base of the instrument panel. An USB outlet has been fixed on the vertical face of the covered storage console.

A comprehensive collection of standard safety features include crash avoiding technologies in the form of visual and audible alerts thus helping to identify potential crash situations giving the driver sufficient warning time to react and act accordingly. Other features include Automatic Parking Assist, which provide hands-free parking.
