In the small segment of the automobile industry, the midsize truck got a brand new promising product on Sunday at the Detroit Auto Show as GMC unveiled the all new 2015 GMC Canyon. According to GM CEO – elect Mary Barra during the unveiling, ‘The 2015 GMC Canyon redefines the midsize truck segment with its style, refinement and capability. It is purely GMC.’ Offering in base, SLE+All terrain package and SLT models, in 2WD and 4WD models, the Canyon will be available this fall. After revealing the Chevrolet Colorado hardly two months back, this vehicle follows hotly on its (w)heels with similar configurations such as engine options . According to GM, they expect the Canyon to lead the segment with its fuel efficiency, horsepower, payload, performance and refinement. With this vehicle, GM also completes its three truck line-up alongside the redesigned 2014 Sierra 1500 and 2015 Sierra HD. Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing said, ‘It rounds out a line up that offers the broadest range of capabilities in the industry, giving truck customers more choices to find the vehicle that meets their professional, personal and lifestyle needs.’

In body configurations the vehicle comes with an extended cab mode with a six foot bed, a crew cab with six foot bed and crew cab with a five foot bed. If the EZ lift – and – lower locking tailgate is kept down, the six foot bed allows eight foot long items to be hauled within the vehicle. There are two kinds of aluminium block engines with direct injection and variable valve timing available. One is a 2.5litre inline – four comes standard (193 hp and 184 lb – ft torque). The other is 3.6 litre V6 (302 hp and 270 lb – ft). Features of the engines include direct injection and variable valve timing which boosts power and efficiency, forged steel crankshaft, dual – overhead camshafts and jet – spray piston cooling. There are choices for three trim levels and either two or four wheel drive. In transmission, there is a six – speed automatic and a six speed manual which is available on the base model with the 2.5 and the 2WD. A diesel version is expected to be launched soon. The GMC is expected to lead the midsize truck segment by being the best payload of at least 1450 pounds and having the best maximum trailering rating of at least 6700 pounds when properly equipped.

When it comes to customer satisfaction, DiSalle says, ‘Not everyone needs full size capability, but they still deserve strength and true truck attributes that come in larger models. The GMC Canyon will offer all the capability with confidence – and GMC’s signature refinement that complements active lifestyles. It also delivers the technology customers want with more standard features.’ In external features, the vehicle comes with a prominent three bar grille, signature C-shaped LED daytime running lamps, projector beam headlamps and rear bumper corner steps. The all terrain package features 17” painted aluminium wheels covered by all terrain tires, a body colour grille surround with horizontal chrome bars and specific suspension tuning. Other wheel options are 16” and 18”. There are thirteen reconfigurable and four stationary tie – down locations throughout the bed for use with available, removable cargo tie down rings. Inside, a bold, upright instrument panel with large instruments and a central driver information center is present along with a center console – mounted shifter. Other interior details include sculpted door panels, upper instrument panel storage – bin, a standard center console with room to store a tablet and rear under seat storage. Available technologies include OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with a built in Wi – Fi hotspot and expected segment-first available driver alert features.
