South Korean Car makers Hyundai have slowly expanded their market over the years and at present their cars are sold in 193 countries with global sales in millions. The Sonata is one of their oldest cars. It was launched first in 1985 but was withdrawn from the market because of poor reception. The second generation was launched in 1988, did much better and became a highly rated sedan all over the world. At the 2014 New York International Auto Show the seventh generation Sonata was introduced for the 2015 model year. The car has been completely restyled for the US market. As this model once helped Hyundai’s sales in the American market, all eyes will be on this new version.

Exterior/ Interior

Hyundai Sonata has always been noted for its attractive and efficient design and this new edition continues that trend. Hyundai continues its Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design style with this car. Smooth surfaces of the body have been complimented with crisp lines. The front grill is larger and air intakes are wider than before. This new model is wider in its dimensions which actually help its overall look. Horizontal rocker panels have been added for increased stability. The rear has been added with a chrome touched lip spoiler and dual exhaust pipes with bright tip. In the lighting department, LED daytime running lamps have made their way into this new Hyundai. The platform of the car has been built with high strength steel that improves ride quality and safety.

The sedan’s premium feel continues on the inside. A totally new angular dashboard design has been added replacing the previous swoopy one. This time the designers have focused on ergonomics. Controls have been arranged in logical groups and have been positioned to provide maximum convenience to the driver. The low center console and the gauge cluster look very high quality. The navigation system comes with an 8 inch screen and there is another display for the audio system as well. The makers have taken great care to reduce noise levels inside the cabin and the result is showing. All together the interior scores well on all areas aesthetics, safety, and convenience.

In the engine department, power has been traded for better responsiveness. The manufacturers are saying that this will help drivers in conditions where the RPM is low. There are two main engine variations but both engines are four cylinders. The 2.4 liter Theta II GDI engine will create 185 horsepower and torque of 178 lb. ft. The other engine option is the more powerful 2.0 liter turbocharged Theta II GDI which can dish out 245 horsepower and torque of 260 lb. ft. Both the engines have been fitted with the new innovative E-CVVT (Electronic Intake Continuously Variable Valve Timing) technology. It helps to reduce emission levels and helps engine performance in lower temperatures. Both engines come with six-speed automatic SHIFTRONIC transmission.

Hyundai has gone great lengths to make sure the new Sonata is high on safety. Safety features like front collision warning, rear traffic alert , blind spot detection that are generally found in high end luxury cars are all present in this midsized car.
