Japanese Automakers made somewhat of a history in 1994 when the Subaru Outback was built as a derivative of the popular Subaru Legacy mid size sedan. The car was historic because it was a wagon with SUV like off-road capabilities and it was one of the earliest crossover cars which later served as an inspiration for many future cars. Over the years, the car has been upgraded from time to time. At the 2014 New York International Auto Show, a fifth generation model was introduced for the year 2015. In its 20 year history, this has been the biggest upgrade for the model. At present, the market is full of many great crossover vehicles. How does this new car performs compared to its rivals is now the biggest question.

Exterior/ Interior

While this new version does not radically deviate from the original, it is now sleeker and more efficiently designed for better performance. The sculpted bodylines emphasize both it’s off road abilities and its new found refinement. The front fascia is totally new with the hexagonal grill and bumper combined perfectly for an elegant look. The impressive ground clearance of 8.7 inches has been kept intact from the older models. The doorsills are now shaped like steps so a person can stand very firmly on them. HID low beam headlights offer a better nighttime performance.

Since this car is strongly inspired by the Subaru Legacy, its interior will feature similarly designed central console, instrument panel and dashboard. To bring in a more premium feel, soft touch materials have been used. The instrument panel has a sporty style with two binocular shaped gauge pads and an LCD display. A new ECO gauge has been added that will indicate how much fuel efficient driving is being done. the armrests now use thicker cushion for better comfort. Other notable features include heating for seats, driver seat with power lumbar adjustment, air filtration system, tinted glass, dual zone climate control etc. the cabin is now quieter than before thanks to the use of floor damping material, thicker panels and foam insulation.

Subaru uses boxer engine in its cars. For the new all wheel drive Outback, it is offering either a four cylinder or a six cylinder engine. The DOHC (double-overhead-cam) FB 2.5-liter BOXER engine that came out in 2013 has been used with enhancements. The power output has been increased to 175 hp from 173 hp. Maximum torque is same as before, 174 lb.-ft. but has been spread over a wider speed range to deliver good performance under all driving conditions.

The 6-cylinder 3.6-liter BOXER engine will generate 256 horsepower and a max torque of 247 lb.-ft. this engine maintains a minimum of 225 lb.-ft. torque between 2,000 to 6,000 rpm, so that the car remains smooth and responsive during everyday use. The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is now a standard feature. It does not change gears and ensures a smooth performance in all conditions. The CVT has been slightly changed to reduce friction and achieve higher millage. There is also a manual mode in which the driver can use wheel paddle switches to make changes.

The Subaru Outback was well known for its safety features and it continues in this new model. New front seat airbags will help to keep the occupant in his place if a collision takes place. A new sensor detects imminent rollover of the car and deploys the side airbags. Also there is Rear Vehicle Detection, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change assist.

A new infotainment system with multi-function touch and voice control has been installed. Enjoy a six speaker audio system along with HD AM/FM radio, CD player, Bluetooth connectivity, iPod support, Smartphone integration and more.
