BMW has launched a 2014 model year ( In USA it will be 2015) F80 M3 salon. A coupe version is also launched but under the M4 badge. Both the cars were showcased at the 2014 North American International Auto Show that was held in the city of Detroit. The makers have said that this new model will deliver improved performance. The M series was originally conceived as a high performance edition of the BMW 3 series sedans. Since its release, the cars have received tremendous praise from car critics, with some even calling it the best car in the world. The development of these cars is carried out by BMW M, BMW’s own motorsport division. Critics are already calling the new M series cars something of a supercar for daily use. The car was developed with inputs from experienced race drivers. The M3 F80 salon has the following specifications- Wheelbase of 2810 mm/110.6 in, width of 1,811 mm /71.3 in, the length is 4,624 mm /182.0 in, the height is 1,429 mm /56.3 in. the curb weight is 3,353 lbs. /1,521 kg. The car has been made lighter than the previous version. Its weight is similar to the E46 M3 model that was built from 1999 to 2006.

Exterior/ Interior

The outer body of the car has been built using multiple materials. The roof is carbon-fiber, the doors and the bonnet is aluminum and the rest is steel. Advanced aerodynamics have been used in the car with defined rear Gurney spoiler, smooth underbody and special front apron. The front fascia is powerful and expressive. Key elements include- twin-bar kidney grille with black grille bars, twin headlight arrangement ( LED is optional). Apart from the spoiler you have a pair of jewel like framed twin exhaust tailpipes, which come with high gloss polishing. The rear wheel arches are noticeably flared up.

The interior has similarities with the regular BMW 3 and 4 series models but the ergonomics here is outstanding with the focus clearly on the driver. But the designers have also given the inside a high end sporty look. The buyer will get leather wrapped M steering wheel, bucket style sport seats, roof-liner, foldable rear seats etc. Heating and electric adjustment options are available with the seats.

Engine/ Performance

While its previous model had a V8, this new model has been given a six cylinder engine paired with a six speed manual gearbox that can churn out power of 431 hp and peak torque of 550 Nm. There is also the option of seven speed M DCT ( Double Clutch Transmission) gear box with ‘Drivelogic’ technology that can change gear without any interruption in power flow resulting in reduced shift time. the car has awesome acceleration capabilities. It can go 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds ( 3.9 seconds, if the gearbox is DCT). Normally the top speed is 155 mph but those who have ‘need for speed’ can go for the optional M driver package that will raise the top speed to 174 mph. the engine also delivers tremendous fuel economy of approx 34 mpg and very low CO2 emission of 194 g/km.


BMW M has developed a new ‘Laptimer’ app that can be used for analyzing the driver’s driving style. You can use it by connecting your Smartphone with the car. Among the main features are a new generation Navigation system, Driving Assistant Plus( warns the driver of possible collision with pedestrians), the advanced ‘LED High Beam Assistant’.

There is an optional Head-Up Display that is packed with extra M-specific functions like, Optimum Shift Indicator, gear display and rev counter .
