Japanese car makers Toyota introduced the subcompact car ‘Yaris’ in the year 1999 in place of its older car , Toyota Starlet. In the last few years the car has been facing stiff competition from similar cars like the Nissan Versa and Honda Fit. To improve its presence in the particular segment in European and American markets Toyota decided to refresh the car both from inside and outside. For this task, Toyota’s European Design Centre and its Research and Development Division worked really hard and came with the 2015 model. Toyota has now revealed this new car to the world and now it is time to see, how much their hard work pays off.

Elvio D’April, the design head of the new Toyota has said that because of the stiff competition in the segment, they wanted the car to stand out in the crowd. Therefore the external design is much more different than stereotypical sub-compact cars. As a result of this perspective, the very distinctive exterior of the 2015 ‘Yaris’ is strong and dynamic. This is inspired by Toyota’s ‘Under Priority frontal design concept’ based on Keen Look detailing. The restyled front fascia features an upper front grille that has been tweaked and trapezoidal lower grille. New headlamps and chrome bar round off the front design. The buyers can also opt for LED daytime running lamps. A new front spoiler has also been added. The new car has been given electrical folding door mirrors. Four wheel design options and two wheel sizes, 15” and 16” are available. On the rear, a new bumper design with integral diffuser is seen that gives the car a lower yet more strengthened stance. The rear side also gets an effective light signature thanks to a new, LED light graphic and upgraded clusters for the rear lamps.

The head of the new car’s interior design was Pierre Romeo who has pointed out three main aspects that were behind the new interior design. These are- enhanced dynamism and roominess, better sensory quality of the car’s interior environment and combination of color variation-sophisticated finish-simple visuals. There are significant cosmetic changes on the inside. The dashboard has been given a horizontal feel. The instrument panel is now thinner than the previous versions. The door panels and the dash get more soft touch plastic. A new fabric is used for the seats and it is available in different colors. A number of new interior theme colors have been introduced -black, tan and red. The central console of the car is now powered by Toyota Touch 2 multimedia systems and the size of the touch screen display has been increased from 6.1” to 7”.

Driving Experience

To make the driving of the new ‘Yaris’ more pleasurable, customer feed-backs have been considered. Significant reduction of NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) is a key area of the new model. The body structure of the car is now more rigid resulting in a better response to steering inputs and more comfort and improved body balance. The rear suspension now includes a stiffer torsion beam, softer coil springs and a new bound stopper. These additions will allow good body control and better front/rear grip of the car.

The new ‘Toyota Yaris’ has four different powertrain- one diesel, two petrol and one hybrid. The 1.5 liter petrol was also used in the previous model. It produces 106 hp power and 103 lb.-ft. of torque. There are two transmission options- the standard six speed manual and the four speed automatic. The engines have been made to comply with EURO 6 standards and therefore have excellent emission levels.
