The TDI or Turbocharged Direct Injection design was developed for turbo diesel engines by the Volkswagen Group. The engine is used in all passenger car marquees under Volkswagen including Audi. 25 years ago German car brand Audi launched the first TDI engine in the market with the Audi 100 executive car. The company is all set to the 25th anniversary in style with the detailed ‘RS5 TDI concept’ which features Audi’s latest innovation, a ‘supplemental electric turbocharger.’ Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, of the Technical development board has said, “25 years ago, Audi launched the first TDI on the market, writing the first chapter of an enduring success story…our latest innovation is the electric turbocharger, which further improves not just sprint times and pulling power, but also efficiency. This technology illustrates the possibilities harbored by 48-volt electrical systems, which we are currently developing for use in production vehicles.” The company is yet to announce any plans on sending the new engine to production but it is expected to be used in the new Audi Q7.

The car has been given a 3.0 liter V6 TDI bi-turbo diesel engine. When boosted by the electric turbocharger, the engine becomes more efficient and sportier. The engine can produce 283 kW /385 hp power and torque of 750 Nm /553.2 lb-ft. When starting off the supplemental electric turbocharger generates awesome power. According to Audi, “an electric motor replaces the turbine wheel and accelerates the compressor wheel to over 70,000 rpm in a few hundredths of a second. The exhaust turbochargers also provide as much as 2.4 bar of relative boost pressure.” The ‘Audi RS5 TDI concept’ can go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a jaw drooping 4 seconds and the top speed is 280 km/h (174 mph). The car also has an impressive fuel consumption of 5.3L / 100 km (44.3 mpg US/ 53.2 mpg UK).pt
