Ford Motors is one of the oldest and biggest car manufacturers in the world. It has developed acclaimed vehicles in almost every segment- commercial vehicles, sedans, hatchbacks, sports based cars and of course SUV’s. North America, Ford’s home market is one of the biggest markets for the CUV/crossover segment. Naturally the company always tries to come up with high quality products. The ‘Ford Edge’ first build in 2006 was one of Ford’s earliest efforts in the crossover SUV (CUV) segment. Upon release, the car met with success and won several awards. After seven years of primarily being sold in North America, the all new second generation ‘2015 Ford Edge’ will now be sold in more than 100 countries in the world. In recent years Ford has dominated the crossover utility vehicle segment and the company clearly wants to build on that. The new model will be given more features, new design aspects and even better performance to suit the needs of today’s demanding clients. The original model proved that a crossover can be used as an everyday vehicle and now this new model will be taking the idea even forward. The car was recently given separate launches in US and Europe. Speaking on the occasion of its release, Raj Nair, Ford’s Vice President for Global Product Development, said, “The original Edge was our first entry into the world of crossover utilities – a technologically advanced vehicle that was the perfect blend of sedan comfort and efficiency with SUV functionality…Now, we are building on that success, and building on the emotional appeal of the vehicle by offering more of the technology our customers want in a package that meets the highest expectations for quality and craftsmanship.”

The most notable thing about the exterior is the new body design. Ford is using the same midsized platform that is found in the Ford Fusion. It is one of those rare cars whose rear design packs more punch than the front. The body-spanning taillight array and a steep rake to the rear window are the most notable aspects. The front fascia is not as dramatic as the rear. The hexagonal front grille looks more conventional and less sporty.

The interior is very similar to the previous generation although better materials have been used to give it a more premium feel. The central console and dashboard has been designed to look like one streamlined piece. A new 8 inch touch screen LCD has been added. The cabin is more spacious and quieter than before. Another notable feature is the ‘Panoramic Vista’ sun roof, one of the largest available in the market at 47.7 inches.

There are a total of three power options for this new ‘Ford Edge’. Ford’s famed EcoBoost engine has been made standard with this model. The 2.0 liter twin-scroll EcoBoost turbocharged engine can create 245 hp and 270 lb-ft. of torque. Then there is the twin turbo charged 2.7 liter V6 engine, considered one of the most advanced engines in the world and capable of creating more than 300 horsepower. The third option is the naturally aspirated 3.5 liter V6 engine whose figures are not yet revealed. There is only gearbox available with this car, a six-speed automatic with ‘SelectShift’ manual mode.

For better handling and smoother ride quality, the car will be using redesigned suspensions- MacPherson suspension for the front and integral-link independent for the rear with antiroll bar and coil springs. Other safety features are-

  • Inflatable safety belts for the rear
  • Curve control and Roll stability control
  • Glove box knee air bag

Technology features include-

  • The all new ‘Adaptive steering’ technology for great handling and steering response
  • Auto Start-Stop technology
  • Front and rear camera
  • Heated/ cooled front seats, heated rear seats
  • Parking and Lane keeping assist
  • SYNC with MyFord Touch infotainment system
