Ford has such a long and illustrious history of producing cars that it is quite easy to forget that the company is also one of the largest manufacturers of commercial vehicle.es- bus, truck, van. At one point of time the companies even use to build tractors. One of its most well known ranges of light commercial vehicles is the ‘Ford Transit’, first introduced in 1965 and given an update for the 2015 model year. Although it is mostly sold in the cargo van form, other forms like pickup truck, minibus, cutaway van chassis (for ambulance, school bus etc.) and passenger van. Although originally built for European market, it is now available worldwide. For 40 years it has been the highest selling light commercial vehicle in Europe and sold in large numbers in North America as well. Since its arrival, more than 7 million units of the vehicle have sold worldwide.

The current sixth generation ‘Ford Transit’ had its official launch at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. It will be available for sale from later part of 2014. The present generation is especially important because Ford will be replacing the popular ‘E-Series’ range of Van and truck with it. Ford has taken into account the evaluation of the previous generation from drivers so that they can build the new ‘Transit’ better than ever.

Press Release

The official press release from Ford claims that the ‘Transit’ delivers 46 percent more gas mileage than the outgoing E-Series. Ford’s Vice President, Engineering, Kumar Galhotra has stated, “We are excited to serve our fleet and commercial customers in North America with the all- new Transit…Transit is Built Ford Tough And represents One Ford at its best, building on lessons learned from our Decades of leadership in the commercial vehicle markets in the United States and Europe.”

External Features

The new model will be made available in four different body forms – van (commercial and passenger), wagon, chassis cab and cutaway body. Also it will be available in three body lengths, with three roof heights and two wheelbases. This variety in different roof heights and wheelbases will allow the vehicle to be built in various body forms and it adds diversity to the model’s range. The unibody structure of the vehicle is built by mostly using boron steel for durability and weight savings.

The maximum payload capacity of the vehicle is an impressive 4,650 pounds which the company claims is better than similar products made by Chrysler and General Motors. Significantly, the capacity for payload is 600 pounds more than the outgoing E-Series vans. The maximum cargo capacity of the new vehicle is 487.3 cubic feet (75 percent increase from the largest E-Series) and the maximum towing capacity is a mind boggling 7500 pounds. To make the functions of Towing and hauling easy, Ford is using the trademark SelectShift auto transmission with various modes.
