Ram Trucks (originally Ram Trucks division) was founded for model year 2010, in 2009 by Chrysler group but has a background that dates back to 1981. In that year, Chrysler owned Dodge brand first introduced the ‘Dodge Ram’ full size pickup truck. It has went on to become one of the best known vehicles in its segment in various parts of the world, including USA, Mexico, Canada, Middle East, Brazil etc. It has also won multiple ‘Truck of The year’ awards. In 2009, Chrysler was acquired by Fiat group and changes were made. It was decided that there will be a separate division for trucks and that resulted in the creation of the division. According to Chrysler, this division was created to focus on real truck customers,’ rather than the occasional or casual buyer. From 2009 after Fiat’s acquisition of Chrysler till 2013, the company did not offer any large vans for US and Canada market. But in 2013 at the Chicago Auto Show, the ‘Ram ProMaster’ was introduced for the first time. It is based on the third generation ‘Fiat Ducato’ commercial vehicle, rebadged and modified for the American market. For the 2015 model year, the manufacturers have now unveiled the ‘ProMaster City’, its first venture in the newly emerging compact commercial vehicle segment preferred by small and medium business owners. Just like the previous, ‘ProMaster’, this model too is based on a Fiat Van, the ‘Doblo’ (introduced in 2000). Both the Fiat version and Ram version are being built in the same manufacturing plant in Turkey. The vehicle will be made available for sale early next year. Reid Bigland, CEO of Ram Trucks has said, “As businesses strive for lower costs, the demand for a smaller, more efficient van has increased and Ram Commercial is answering the bell with the all-new ProMaster City.” He added, “Years ago, the selection of delivery and cargo vehicles was limited and those offerings didn’t focus on cost of ownership. Today all of that has changed with the recent introduction of the full-size Ram ProMaster, and the now the Ram ProMaster City.”

Although having a design that is very similar to its European counterpart, there are familiar Dodge elements. The front fascia has revised headlights (twin reflectors), high wraparound bumpers and the grille is right below the head lamps. The body structure has been made unibody and it helps to achieve, the impressive payload capacity of 1833 lbs. The makers are also claiming that the vehicle has the highest cargo space in the segment 131.7 cubic feet, thanks to its wheelbase of 122.4 inches. The towing capacity is also excellent at 2000 lbs/ 907 Kg. The van has a tuned MacPherson strut suspension in the front and bi-link coil sprung suspension at the rear. On each side there is a slide door and the rear has swing doors with 60/40 split. The interior of the van though simple, has driving ergonomics that will help the drivers tackle long hours of driving. It has a ‘simplified color palette’ of black and grey. Other features include- seats made of durable fabric, tie down rings and 5 inch color touchscreen. The infotainment system is based on ‘Uconnect’ web and electronic interface that offers constant internet, real time information and Bluetooth features like hands-free calling.

For power the ‘ProMaster City’ depends on a four-cylinder, 2.4 liter Tigershark engine. The engine can produce torque of 174 lb-ft (234 Nm) and 178 bhp (137 kW). The engine comes with 9 speed auto transmission. The makers have also added about 34 active/ passive security and safety features including rear camera and electronic stability control.
