British race car pioneers McLaren has unveiled the new ‘McLaren 650S GT3’ race car at the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed this year. The car is based on the recently released ‘650S’ (both coupe and roadster) but has been modified so that it can take part in GT3 championships all around the world from the 2015 season. The car has the difficult task to follow in the footsteps of the highly successful ‘12C GT3’ car which has won trophies around the world. But looks like McLaren will leave no stones unturned to achieve that. However, the makers have made it clear that the 12C will not be replaced by the new car. Andrew Kirkaldy, MD of McLaren GT has said, “The 650S GT3 is a natural progression of an already successful racer, but we have looked at all the different areas where we could possibly make even the slightest incremental improvement.” About 15 units will be developed before the next year’s racing season.

Design

This latest GT3 vehicle has the same carbon fiber chassis that is found in the 650S but the front has been slightly redesigned to look more aggressive. The carbon fiber material and the composite body panels will help the car to have better aerodynamics. The suspensions have been given race tuning. Inside, the cockpit has been made more secure for the driver with FIA-approved rollcage that also offers more room and better comfort. Other notable features are –specially developed sports seat, Formula 1 inspired steering wheel and new digital dash display.

Engine

McLaren has put the familiar twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine in the ‘650S GT3’. It is mated to a six-speed gearbox with competition-spec sequence. The engine has the ability to produce up to 641 horsepower in road specs, going by the Balance of Power regulations of the FIA, it has given an upper limit of 493 hp.
