German pioneer BMW has plans to introduce the ‘BMW i’ range as a new brand. The latest addition to the range is the 2015 model year ‘BMW i8.’ The hybrid piug-in sports car was first unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Productions started from middle of 2014. In Germany the car has been launched while in the US (its largest target market) the car will be launched in August. The new model has its origins in the BMW Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics that launched back in 2009. It was refined and presented as the ‘i8 concept’ in 2011. Now the time has come for the production version which may start a new era of sports cars.

According to the official press release, “The concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics created excitement and very positive feedback at the IAA 2009. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics made it clear that an emotional sports car with the fuel economy of a small car is no contradiction and could soon be reality. After successful initial testing of the vehicle

concept, the decision for a series-production vehicle was quickly made. The BMW i8 Concept is the next step in the evolution of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. The result: The most progressive and innovative sports car of its time. Its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 Concept – fitted over its front axle – with a high-performance three-cylinder combustion engine producing 164 kW/220 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at the rear. Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents to the full, delivering the performance of a sports car but the fuel consumption of a small car.” President and CEO of BMW North America, Ludwig Willisch has said that the ‘i8’ is, “the most progressive sports car of our time…it will compete with supercars with its looks and driving performance.”

The design of the new car, created by Benoit Jacob is ground breaking from all aspects. Both the front and the rear section have a low slung design that makes it look very dynamic. The front view of the car exudes its sporting nature. There is large air intakes on the front apron placed over several levels to give an impression of depth. The BMW kidney grille is very broad and stretches to the slim shaped full LED headlights. The rear end has horizontal lines that focus on the width and showcases the car’s dynamic potential. The rear end has been bordered by the wheel arches with sculpted design. The rear window is sloping and opens high, for giving easy entry to the storage section. The lights, reflectors and diffuser all together form a single view that enhances the car’s power packed appearance. Like the lights in front, the rear lights are also LED. When opened the doors go upwards like wings, adding a sense of excitement.

The surfaces of the roof and doors are transparent and give the impression of merging together. There is a bespoke steering wheel that has multifunction controls. The seats are lightweight and traditional sports styled. There is also the iDrive infotainment system in the car. The fine quality leather used in the interior is tanned with olive extract that gives it a natural look.

The powertrain of the new ‘BMW i8’ is like best of two power sources. The 3 cylinder 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine can create 170 kW/231 hp. The electric motor running on lithium-ion battery generates 96 kW/131 hp. The advanced powertrain allows the car to have a great acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds.
