Apart from high end passenger cars, German car maker Mercedes is also known as a major manufacturer of light commercial vehicles. The Mercedes-Benz V Class is a light van that can be used for multiple purposes. In some markets it was also known as the Mercedes-Benz Vito or Viano. The vehicle was first launched in 1996 with the second generation coming out in 2003. Based on the V-class a special Camper van version was also created and was named the ‘Marco Polo.’ Mercedes developed the camper van in association with the automobile contractor Westfalia, the organization that had built popular Volkswagen campers and buses since 1951. Around 1999, the parent company of Mercedes, DaimlerChrysler began purchasing stakes in the company. Eventually in 2001, it also took over the remaining stakes and thus ended their association with rivals Volkswagen. The ‘Marco Polo’ camper has received two updates since its launch. From its launch till now, it has been called the Viano Marco Polo. But since the latest edition of V-Class will be replacing the older Vito and Viano vans, the camper was also in need of some overhauling. At this years, Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, Germany, the new 2014 ‘Mercedes Marco Polo’ camper will be released. It will be pitted against the Volkswagen California, a similar vehicle. The van will be available for ordering from 29th July, 2014. According to the official press release, “With the new Marco Polo, Mercedes-Benz is presenting a compact camper van at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf which combines maximum practicality with design appeal and stylishness. The interior impresses with its unrivalled feel-good ambience, outstanding comfort and high quality of appointments reminiscent of an exclusive lounge. At the same time the Marco Polo developed in cooperation with longstanding Mercedes-Benz partner Westfalia convinces with its extraordinarily practical features – from the stowage facilities and seating/sleeping arrangements to the camping equipment for outdoors. The standard specification already sets new standards in the compact camper van segment with respect to perceived quality, homeliness and comfortable practicality…The compact camper van is ready any time – for vacation, spontaneous weekend trips out in the nature instead of staying in a hotel, for extended shopping trips with the entire family or even for driving to work. Therefore the Marco Polo offers a maximum of opportunities to be independent, free and spontaneous.”

While the exterior still has similarities with the previous models, the interior has gone through significant changes to make it comfortable for family trips. The interior creates the ultimate feel good ambience. It has been designed for outstanding comfort and the use of high quality materials has given the inside of the van a lounge like feel. The seats are available in both leather and fabric. The floor has been given yacht wood and the surface has porcelain like finish. Then there are various metallic accents, piano black color trim and LED ambient lighting. To fulfill the requirement of the travelers , there is a sink, a refrigerator and a fully function kitchen with gas burners, folding tables. You will also get cupboard and closet for storing items. Another great interior addition is seats that are electrically adjustable. With push of a button the seats will transform into a bed. If there are multiple riders, you can use the second bed that is placed in the roof compartment. It has high quality foam mattress that provides almost home like comfort on the go.

To move around in the Mercedes Marco Polo’, the buyer will get to chose from a variety of diesel engines. There is the base 200 CDI engine that creates 136 PS (100 kW) and torque of 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) while the 220 CDI engine belts out 163 PS (120 kW) and torque of 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. The range-topping engine has ability of 190 PS (140 kW) and torque of 440 Nm (324 lb-ft) but that figure can increase slightly while the vehicle is accelerating.
