Japanese carmakers Mitsubishi designed the ‘Lancer Evolution’ (popularly known as Evo) sports car based on its popular Lancer compact car. Originally the manufacturers intended to sell the car only in the Japanese market. But after seeing the growing demand through grey market sales, the company decided to sell the car in the UK and other markets across Europe. Till 2003 the Evo was not sold in the United States but seeing the success of its longtime direct rival Subaru Impreza WRX STi, the car was launched there. Till date ten official versions of the car has been released, each model being denoted by roman numerals. Since 2011 rumors of the model’s discontinuation have doing rounds of the automobile industry. Latest reports suggest that even if the nameplate is continued, it will only be as a hybrid model. According to a press release issued by Mitsubishi in March 2014, “Mitsubishi Motors does not have any plans to design a successor with the current concept, as a high-performance four-wheel drive gasoline-powered sedan. Mitsubishi Motors will explore the possibilities of high-performance models that incorporate electric vehicle technology.” Even though in many markets around the world the model has been already discontinued, the customers in the US will get atleast one more version albeit a modestly revised one. The new model will go into production in July 2014 and later will be launched as 2015 model year. Alex Fedorak, PR manager of Mitsubishi North America has said, “Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is committed to introducing the 2015 model year Lancer Evolution in the U.S. Production of North American-specification Lancer Evolution models for the 2015 model year will commence in July 2014.” While the future of the Evo is far from clear, it will be interesting to see what Mitsubishi does in the final run with this famous model.
