The Transporter van, built by German auto giant Volkswagen has turned 60 this year. Its range of light commercial vehicles cover a large number of variants including- van, pickup, minivan, camper van, minibus etc. Its main segment rivals include the Ford Transit and the Mercedes-Benz Vito. The model is currently in its fifth generation. To celebrate the 60th anniversary, Volkswagen has launched a special edition of the ‘Transporter Sportline’, its top of the range variant, only for buyers in the United Kingdom. According to Volkswagen’s official press release, “First sold officially in the UK in 1954, the Transporter range has formed the backbone of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles range for six successful decades. Over the years, the Transporter has helped millions of owners build businesses and fulfill dreams. From globetrotters to gardeners, the Transporter has become the default choice for many generations. And while the Transporter has evolved dramatically during that time – through five generations – the philosophy and vision that created the original still holds true…. To date, more than 300,000 Transporters have been sold in the UK, with 18,350 sold in 2013 alone. The current Transporter range is one of the broadest in the commercial vehicle sector and comprises of panel van, Kombi, Shuttle, Caravelle and California variants…Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is celebrating 60 years of the Transporter in the UK with the launch of a new special edition model – the Sportline 60.”

To separate the ‘Transporter Sportline 60 Special Edition’ from the other models in the range, several exciting external features have been added. These include- stylish five-spoke Anthracite alloy wheels that are 18 inch is size, black colored door mirror covers, special body decals and black colored side bars made of steel. The option of heated door mirrors is also available. The front fascia has a glossy black chrome finish grille and lower spoiler. Color coded bumpers are available for both rear and front. Also at the rear is a roof spoiler and special badging. The bumpers and door handles are body colored. Body colors include Deep Black and a metallic Reflex Silver. They buyer can also add a Deep Black roof and Caddy white body color combination. The fog lights on the front have cornering light function. The headlights also have a interior chrome styling in them. Volkswagen is saying that it is the most stylish Transporter van ever launched and it is unlikely that many people will disagree. From the inside too, the new model is a class apart. Customers will be enjoying a host of features that is comparable to any luxury car. The latest version of Kenwood sat-nav infotainment system with a 7 inch screen is in the van. The system supports Bluetooth, DAB, iPod connectivity and Smartphone mirroring and provides the driver with traffic information in real time. The driver will also get help from a Trip computer that shows multi function display. The interior has designed with embossed leather upholstery and is also adorned by a ‘Sportline 60 edition logo. The logos are also there on the front floor mats. The steering wheel and gear knobs have been covered with leather. There are also power windows, armrest for the front seat, semi automatic climate control/air conditioning, remote controlled central locking, stereo CD/ DVD player, camera based front and rear parking sensors. For enhanced safety this new Transporter van has been fitted with ABS ( Anti Lock Braking System).

To drive such a vehicle you need the right kind of power. In this case, the power is provided by a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder, BiTDI engine that produces 180 PS (132 kW) and torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) and sends it to wheels through 7-speed DSG or 6-speed manual transmission.
