One of Volkswagen’s best known cars is definitely the mid size sedan/ large family car ‘Passat.’ It can be hard to believe but the car has already crossed four decades. The first model was built in 1973 and it has gone on to establish itself as one the top selling cars in the world. Passat model generations are distinguished by designations like B1, B2, B3, etc. The model was launched as part of a new range of Volkswagen cars, built on new engineering techniques after Volkswagen took over Audi. From 1973 to 1986 the model shared its platform with the Audi 80. Currently two main variants of Passat are manufactured. Since 2011, a NMS (New Mid-size) is being sold in North American, Chinese and South Korean market. In other markets, the regular seventh generation model, the B7 is sold. Volkswagen is now ready with another new generation of the model, the B8. It will be released as for 2015 model year and is expected to debut in late 2014. Since 2005’s B6, the manufacturers have made the car more up-market to reach the top tier of its segment. With the B8, this trend will continue with the aim of taking the car to an even higher level. Volkswagen’s Head of Design, Klaus Bischoff, said about the new car, “In the new Passat we wanted to make a formal jump to the next higher vehicle class. Our objective was to sculpturally develop the potential of this vehicle into a business saloon. What was important for me was to develop significant design themes that radiate an impressive visual presence and express the powerful sporty character of the new Passat.”

The upcoming model will be built on a new platform, MQB (modular transverse matrix). The designers wanted to achieve more power and a clearly styled design and from the early photos it looks like they have achieved it. The new model has been given the same underpinnings from the ‘Volkswagen Golf’ which actually reduces cost of production, makes the car 85kg lighter and improves the driving experience. Despite being more than 40 years old, the model is still at par with many younger segment rivals like Skoda Superb in terms of design. It has been given a new front grille which is much larger compared to the headlights and it actually contributes to its impressive presence. The makers have introduced a new light design with LED options and Halogen. The rear too has received new LED taillight options. The rear design is like that of a sports car that has strong ‘inward cab’ look and has a rounded bumper.

The interior is marked by the use of new designing solutions and new technology features. The new platform has made the interior longer even though the car is overall shorter than before. The interior is marked by a new innovative air vent that covers the entire interior width and also works as a design element. Other notable additions include ambient lighting, active info display ( in 2D and 3D) and for the first time in a Volkswagen, Heads-up display showing information such as navigational information and car speed.

A new addition has been made to the ‘Passat’ engine range in form of powerful diesel engine. The 2.0-litre TDI Bi-Turbo can produce 237bhp, 62bhp more than the current most powerful diesel unit. It will come mated with DSG automatic gearbox. Volkswagen claims that despite the high power it can deliver 53mpg efficiency.

The new ‘Volkswagen Passat’ will also have a hybrid powertrain, petrol-electric plug-in hybrid. It can produce 208bhp and travel a distance of 31 miles on just electricity.
