The ‘Dodge Durnago’ Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was first launched in the year 1997 as 1998 model year. The second generation came out in 2004. Both the generations were based on the platform of the Dodge Dakota pickup truck. For the third generation that came out in 2011, Dodge used the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and introduced unibody construction to the range. The SUV was revised for the 2014 model year with new designing elements, both inside and outside, new transmission, steering wheel etc. Now the American manufacturer has introduced a special Blacktop appearance package for the 2014 ‘Durango’. The official press release read, “Dodge is rounding out its offering of Blacktop Packages for 2014, adding the three-row Durango to the lineup of Dodge vehicles with the sporty, sinister look. With the addition of Durango, the Dodge brand now offers the Blacktop Appearance Package on seven of its 2014 model year vehicles, including Charger, Challenger, Dart, Avenger, Journey and Grand Caravan…Building on the Durango’s distinctive, sporty design, along with class-leading power, driving range and towing, the Blacktop Package features unique Gloss Black 20-inch aluminum wheels, dual rear exhaust with bright tips offering 295 horsepower with the V-6 and 360 horsepower with the HEMI® V-8, a Gloss Black crosshair grille with matching grille surround, Gloss Black side mirrors, Gloss Black exterior badging, black headlamp bezels, body color fascia and moldings, and five options for exterior paint colors. The Blacktop Appearance Package is available on Durango SXT, Limited and R/T models.” Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO – Dodge Brand and SRT Brand, Chrysler Group LLC, said, “The rear-wheel-drive based Dodge Durango is already one of a kind. It stands out as the Charger of the three-row SUV segment…Now with Blacktop Package, customers can make it even more unique, and it’s customized by the factory.”

The main features of the package are-

  • lower front fascia ascents in gloss black
  • Gloss black exterior mirrors

When fitted in the ‘Durango R/T’ model, the Blacktop Package will add 20 inch gloss black aluminum wheels, gloss black crosshair front grille with matching surrounds and also special gloss Black badging. This is the most affordable package in terms of prize. When the package is applied to the ‘Durango XT’ model, it will add the same 20-inch aluminum wheels, dual bright tipped rear exhaust, the same gloss black crosshair front grille with matching surround and the gloss black badging. Extra additions include black side mirrors, headlamp bezels, and fascias and moldings in the body color. This is the second most expensive Blacktop package. On the Durango Limited models, the package will add the features from the XT model. Extra features are- HID headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRLs), premium leather interior. This is the most expensive package of the three. There are five exterior colors available – Brilliant Black , Billet Silver, Bright White, Granite Crystal and Redline Red.

The ‘Dodge Durango R/T’ Blacktop will be powered by a standard issue HEMI 5.7 liter V-8 engine. The engine can produce best-in-class power of 360 hp and torque of 390 lb.-ft. It also has a best-in-class tow rating of 7,400 pounds. There is a new instrument panel in the car that features a new central console with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display with Uconnect infotainment. The bottom part of the center stack now contains a new media section with USB slot, SD card slot and auxiliary jack and a storage bin. There is also a new steering wheel in the car.
