Famous British sports car manufacturer McLaren Automotive launched the limited production plug-in hybrid car ‘P1’ in October 2013 in the UK. Only 375 units were produced and all of them were sold out by November 2013. The model was acclaimed by critics and it was considered to be a successor to the iconic ‘McLaren F1’. McLaren is now ready to launch a special track-only version of the car, the ‘P1 GTR’. It will be released to observe the 20thanniversary of the McLaren F1 GTR wining the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. The manufacturer has claimed that the ‘P1 GTR’ will be the most powerful McLaren to date. The car will make its official debut at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance automotive in on 17th August. Just like the ‘P1’ it will also be a very limited production model and will be offered to the ‘P1’ owners first. McLaren has claimed that the target of the ‘P1 GTR’ is “to be the best driver’s car in the world on track.”

The official press release states, “Twenty years ago, the then soon-to-be-launched McLaren F1 GTR began testing ahead of an assault on the 1995 GT season. The track derivative, as the road-going version had done, rewrote the rule book and the claimed victories and titles across the globe in the years that followed, securing a place in motorsport folklore. Two decades on, and the covers have been pulled off the dramatic and purposeful McLaren P1™ GTR design concept during a private event at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event in California. The aggressive racing concept is a preview to the final model which, with a little under a year until production commences, has now entered the next phase as the development team works to hone and further optimise the ultimate track-focused racer. With no need to meet the legislations for road legality, the McLaren P1™ GTR will be the most track-tailored and most powerful model produced by McLaren Special Operations to date, with a clear target even more focused than its road-going sibling: to be the best driver’s car in the world on track. With even greater emphasis on aerodynamic performance through the dramatic bodywork, the McLaren P1™ GTR will also feature race-proven slick tyres, a fixed ride height, enhanced power delivery from the IPAS powertrain and Formula 1™-derived DRS from the large, fixed rear wing and an ERS-style push-to-pass system, all combining to offer the ultimate track experience.”

McLaren has freely created the design of this car that looks absolutely capable of delivering the claimed track performance. The British car maker has paid a little more attention to improve the aerodynamics, so that the car can offer “more extreme performance”. The front track is now wider and has a bigger GT-style splitter. The cooling system for the brakes and the engine has also improved. The height has also been lowered. The mirrors have been repositioned and now sit on the A-pillar for better visibility and to reduce the drag. The car also rides on unique 19-inch motorsport lightweight alloy wheels. To make tire changes easier, an onboard air jacking system from the setup of the ‘650S GT3’ racecar has been added. Active aerodynamics are found on the rear as well with a fixed-height wing working together with the active aero flaps situated before the front wheels. Under the hood of the new car, you will find the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine of the ‘P1’ that has been enhanced to produce mind boggling 986 horsepower, an increase of 83 hp.

Along with the launch of the ‘P1 GTR’ McLaren has also announced some details about its new driver program that comes with ownership. It includes specialized driver training, facility of using a racing simulator and more.
