Swedish car maker Volvo first launched the mid size luxury crossover SUV ‘XC90’ in 2002. Now Volvo is all set to introduce the second generation as a 2015 model year. The model is going to be very important for the success of the company in the coming days. On the day of the official unveiling, Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group said, “This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company. The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years.” Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Car Group explained one of the aspect of the car, “The overall impression, both exterior and interior, has a strong connection to the key elements of the Swedish lifestyle: the generous space, the celebration of light and the focus on wellbeing. ” The official press release states, “Months of speculation ended today after Volvo Cars unveiled its all-new Volvo XC90, delivering on its promise to introduce a visually striking, seven-seat luxury SUV with world leading safety features, advanced powertrain technologies, an unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency and a superlative interior finish…Three years in the making and part of an $11 billion investment program, the all-new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo’s history, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilizing its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology…Symbolizing this historic day in Volvo’s 87 year history, the new XC90 will be the first of its cars to carry the company’s new more prominent iron mark logo, which has the iconic arrow elegantly aligned with the diagonal slash across the grille. Together with the T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights, the iron mark introduces an entirely new, distinctive and confident face for Volvo’s forthcoming generation of cars…” Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research and Development of Volvo said, “SPA has enabled us to create the world’s first SUV without compromises…You get the in-command feel, generous interior space and flexible capability combined with the agility and smooth comfort of a much smaller and lower car. The adrenaline rush that is key to true driving pleasure is delivered by powertrains that offer an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation. And since the XC90 carries the Volvo badge, world-class safety is standard.”


At the front, the very attractive headlights catch attention along with the generous chrome grille with double vertical slats. The side profile has an uncluttered design with clean lines, chrome window framing and 22-inch stylish alloy wheels. Volvo has given a modern interpretation to the signature taillights of the model which is now sharper. There are also optional dark plastic moldings on wheel arches, bumpers and side skirts for those who want a rugged look.

The interior cabin has a minimalistic configuration with few buttons as they have been replaced by touchscreen display. The cabin has space for up to seven people with soft leather seats and four-zone climate control. For entertainment there is a 19-speaker 1,400-watt, Bowers & Wilkins sound system. The makers have used aluminum inserts, wood trim and other high quality materials to create one of the most luxurious Volvo interiors ever.

Other highlights include- digital instrument cluster , voice recognition and Apple’s CarPlay integration.


The second generation ‘XC90’ will have a new range of 4 cylinder Drive-E engines. The twin-turbodiesel D5 has 225 bhp (168 kW) and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) while a D4 unit has190 bhp (142 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). For gasoline, you get a T6 turbocharged & supercharged engine with 320 bhp (239 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) while a T5 variant will have 254 bhp (189 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm). The XC90 will also come with a T8 plug-in hybrid derivative featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged & supercharged four-cylinder motor for front wheels and 80 bhp (60 kW) electric motor for rear axle.
