Japanese car maker Mazda Motor Corporation was founded in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda. The company is mostly known for its sports cars. Apart from building cars it also produces light trucks and also develops engines for other manufacturers. From 1979 to the year 2010 Mazda was in a partnership with Ford. Although all production and developmental ties were severed in 2010, the two companies are still strategic partners and share technological information from time to time. Mazda has also achieved considerable success in the car racing world. It is till date the only Japanese car maker to win the overall Le Mans race. Mazda cars take part in various formats of motorsport and is said to be the most raced brand in the world.

Mazda also holds the distinction of building the highest selling two seat sports car in history, the ‘MX -5’ (known as MX-5 Miata in the USA and Roadster in Japan). This feat was recognized in 2000 by Guinness Book of World records. Till date, more than 940,000 units of the car have been produced. Currently in its third generation, it has won over 200 awards. The ‘MX-5’ was first unveiled in 1989 when there was virtually no lightweight, open type sports car in the market. The model was inspired by the small roadsters built by British and Italian makers that were popular during the 1940’s to 1960’s. Some of the examples include Triumph Spitfire, Alfa Romeo Spider and Lotus Elan. Back in 2012, Mazda and Fiat had announced that they will be working together to develop a new generation roadster under Alfa Romeo brands Mazda brands . While the two brands will use unique engines, both cars will be based on the latest MX-5 rear-wheeled architecture. Finally on 4th September, the fourth generation ‘MX-5’ was revealed in events simultaneously held in USA, Japan and Spain. It was revealed that it will 100 kgs lighter than the outgoing model, with a curb weight around only 1,000 kg (2200 lbs.)

Mazda has remained tight lipped about mechanical specifications. A photo of the engine was revealed recently and it showed that the car is powered by a Skyactiv inline 4-cylinder engine. However there was no information about the capacity of the engine. Industry observers believe that it will either be a 2.0 liter Skyactiv-G (155 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque) or a 2.5 liter Skyactiv-G (184 horse power and 185 lb-ft.)

The design of the latest generation ‘MX-5’ is powered by the new KODO auto design language. Mazda was more interested with how a open-type sports car will look rather paying attention to the ongoing trends in the industry. The large radiator grille seen on the last generation has been replaced this time with more of a basic one that has some similarity with the original model. Mazda also paid a lot of attention to achieved the perfect proportions that will make the occupants look good. The KODO style stance of the car also gives out a sense of stability and at the same time giving out an agile feel. The designers also strived to achieved a perfect 50:50 rear-front weight ratio.

In case of the interior design, the makers wanted to blur the boundaries between the outside and inside of the car. The cockpit of the car will give a snug feeling to the driver and has a singular axis that makes sure concentration is only on the driving.

The major design highlights are as follows-

  • The new ‘MX-5’ is attractive both with top up or top down.
  • The interior maximizes the pleasure of driving an open-top car.
  • Easy to operate soft top.
  • Wind control makes driving fun with the top down.
  • Headrest speakers to further enhance a great driving experience.
