Iconic British car brand Jaguar (full manufacturer name Jaguar Land Rover) was founded in the year 1922. After changing hands several times over the years, it was taken over by Tata Motors in 2008. The Jaguar brand is renowned for both its luxury cars as well as its success in the racing circuit. On multiple occasions Jaguar came up with cars that were the fastest production cars of its time, most notably the ‘XK120’ (1949) and the ‘XJ220’ (1992). Interestingly the company has never produced an SUV although a crossover concept ‘C-X17’ was presented at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Jaguar had announced that it will launch an entry level luxury car, the ‘XE’. However the car was not revealed at the motor show instead it had its official debut on 8th September at a glamorous event in Earls court, London. The reason the company is making the new car such a big deal is that perhaps it is Jaguar’s most important car in decades. It is being touted as the most fuel efficient Jaguar car in history. The compact saloon (sedan) has been built to compete with large selling luxury cars like the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class. The success of the car can transform the company from a limited volume maker to an automobile giant. During the launch Vehicle Line Director Kevin Stride said that Jaguar’s standing as a leading maker of premium aluminum vehicles helped it to develop the ground-breaking body structure of the new car. The ‘XE’ comes with advanced chassis technology and delivers a rare balance of refinement and agility that is generally found on vehicles from upper segments. The heavily aluminum based ‘Jaguar XE’ is the first jaguar car that has been developed with the new modular vehicle architecture developed by Jaguar Land Rover. The new architecture can revolutionize the driving dynamics of midsize cars.

Jaguar’s legendary designer Ian Callum has said that they wanted to create an exciting, dynamic design that positions the new car as a driver’s car. Thanks to the tight packaging and cab-rearward proportions the car appears to move even when it is not moving. The design also has a strong resemblance with the ‘F-Type’ and is sure to capture attention wherever it goes. The new ‘XE’ looks conventional yet sporty at the same time. It has a low seating position and a long wheelbase. Other notable exterior features include- signature Jaguar grille, chrome side vents, air intakes at the front, subtle rear spoiler and 20 inch forged alloy wheels (optional).

The interior cabin has been put together using Exquisite materials along with the typical Jaguar craftsmanship. The cabin is spacious and comfortable. There is also ambient lighting with a choice of 10 colors. Jaguar is also introducing for the first time, electric power steering. The car is boosted by the new InControl infotainment system that comes with an eight inch touch screen. There are features like Voice control, Bluetooth, USB, Wi-fi, navigation, audio streaming and Smartphone connectivity.

The ‘XE’ models will be powered by petrol and diesel engines from its Ingenium range of engines. These 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engines are highly efficient and also have low CO2 emissions. The top of the range ‘XE S’ model will be powered by a 3.0 liter supercharged V6 engine that generates 340PS and torque of 450Nm. This mighty engine is paired with a 8 speed auto transmission with paddle shift that gives the driver almost instant access to the vehicle’s great power. The engine can take the car 0 to 60mph in only 4.9 seconds. The electronically-limited top speed is 155mph.
