Noted Italian car brand Alfa Romeo was founded in 1910. Back then it was known as Lombard Automobile Factory (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili). Shortly after its inception, the company began taking part in motorsport. In 1920, it took up the ‘Alfa Romeo’ name under the direction of Nicola Romeo. Initially, only handmade luxury cars came out from its stable. But after the Second World War, the company was going through a financial crisis and decided to mass produce small cars. Till date, Alfa Romeo has been able to build an impressive track record across various categories of motorsports including Formula One. Its production cars too have received praise for their design and performance. In 1986, the brand became a part of the Fiat group. In 2007, the brand was transformed into Alfa Romeo Automobiles, a subsidiary of Fiat Group. Around 1995, Alfa Romeo had stopped exporting its cars to the American market. News of return to the American market has been doing the rounds for years. After much delay it was announced at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show by Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne that Alfa Romeo will be re-entering the USA market in 2015 with multiple models.

The year 2014 also marks the 60th anniversary of one of Alfa Romeo’s best known nameplates, the ‘Giuletta’. The first ‘Giuletta’ was introduced in 1954 as a coupe. It was shortly followed sedan and two-seater convertible versions. Even some station wagon versions were made by independent coach builders. Production stopped around 1965. In 1977, the nameplate was reintroduced but this new ‘Giuletta’ had a different design and was only offered in sedan body style. However some station wagon versions were also built. In 1985, the model was replaced. The year 2010 saw the rebirth of the ‘Giuletta’ as a five door hatchback. Although the new car is more similar looking to the original model, it is considered to be a widely different car. For the 2014 model year, the car was refreshed with minor styling tweaks and some new features. Alfa Romeo has plans for the 2015 model year as well. The car maker has revealed a high performance ‘Sprint’ version of the ‘Giuletta’. The car is expected to hit the market within few months. While it is not widely different looking from the base model, there are enough differences to distinguish them properly. The model faces competition from cars like Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

The rear area of the ‘Sprint’ mainly sets it apart from the base model. there is a new rear bumper that is integrated with a four finned, diffuser like apron. Then there are larger, chrome exhaust pipes. The front fascia is largely the same. The front grille has been given a glossy finish and there is a different looking frame around the powerful fog lights. The same finish is also given to the door handles and mirror caps. 17inch alloy wheels are standard but the buyer can also go for optional 18inch wheels.

The interior of the ‘Giuletta Sprint’ is marked by a black sports trim and several additional features. The seats are made up of fabric and Alcantara and have special lettering and red stitching. The steering wheels is leather covered and the dash and door panels are painted with carbon colored. Special black floor mats are also there. The car will come with the latest version of the Uconnect infotainment system ( 5 or 6.5 inch touch screen). Rear parking assist, cruise control and satellite navigation are also available.

While engines from the base model are also available with this car, there is a new addition to the engine range. It is a 1.4 liter MultiAir four cylinder petrol engine that can produce 150hp (170 hp also available). It can hit 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds and has top speed of 130mph/ 210 km per hour.
