Iconic Italian car maker Fiat had announced the crossover version of their popular city car ‘500’ back in 2012. The CUV has been given the name ‘500X’. While the car was revealed in July, it had its official public appearance at the 2014 Paris Motor show. The new ‘500X’ will be replacing the mini SUV Fiat Sedici. The sales of the vehicle are expected to start in late 2014 with the UK launch coming in early 2015. The model is very closely related with the upcoming Jeep Renegade as both share the same platform, a modified version of the platform used by the Fiat Punto. This has been made possible because of the tie-up between Fiat and Jeep’s owner Chrysler. Both the models will be sold in the US market and it will be Fiat’s longest model in the American soil. An off-road focused variant called the ‘500X Cross’ will also be sold along with it. It is the second four door model based on the ‘500’. The segment of the car is quite competitive and it is pitted against models like Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and the more expansive Mini Countryman. The new ‘500’ range was stylistically inspired by the original ‘500’ of 1957 and the latest version is no exception.

Designers of Fiat has not tried to do anything new with the look of the ‘500X’ and it is similar to its cousins the ‘500’ and the ‘500L’. It has an uncanny similarity to a Mini Cooper. The classic ‘500’ style signatures like round headlights as well as two piece wide front grille are present. The shape and the placement of the logo has cues of the coupe version. The body of the car is tallish while the windows has been raked steeply. The taillight area has similarities from both the ‘500’ and the MPV ‘500L’. Cladding has been given to the side sills, fenders and bumpers. Eight wheel designs are available while there are three sizes- 18, 17 or 16 inches.

Fiat has added lacquered paneling to the dash of the ‘500X’. But a little bit of corporate touch has been added with the help of the steering wheel with three spoke design. It is similar to what is seen several Jeep models. Another common feature is the climate control (dual-zone). Both fabric and leather is available for interior decoration in a total of seven configurations. The central console has a large color display as well as a touch-screen (either 5 inch or 6.5 inches size) depending on the configuration. Both center screens can support an optional navigational system.

Safety Features

There are six airbags in the car. Also there are the antilock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability (ESC) as standard features. Those who are looking for extra features can opt for warning system for blind spots and Lane departure warning.

In Paris Fiat revealed that it will be offering at least eight powertrain options for the car. There are six petrol/ gasoline units and two diesel units. There are two automatic transmissions- nine speed and a 6 speed dual-clutch and one manual. The minimum power output is 95 hp ( diesel) while the maximum power output is 184 hp with the largest petrol unit. The most powerful engine is a Tigershark four-cylinder 2.4 liter engine, also used in the Chrysler 200, and some other Dodge and Jeep models. The engine is sure to be made available in the US along with some other options. The ‘500X’ will be offered in both front as well as all-wheel drive system. Various modes can be chosen by the driver according to the road and weather conditions.
