French car maker Renault was founded back in 1899 making it one of the oldest automobile manufacturers in the world. The company is one of the biggest in Europe as well as the world. Apart from its tremendous success in the racing and rallying circuit it also has several highly successful mass- production cars to its credit like the ‘Cilo’ and the ‘Renault 9’. Renault set another benchmark in 1984 when it began selling the ‘Espace’ often hailed as the world’s first MPV ( Multi Purpose Vehicle) . In 1991, the second generation model was launched and the third followed in 1997. Although it was sold under the Renault badge, till 1997, the MPV was built by another manufacturer Matra, also based in France. With the launch of fourth generation in 2003, the entire production was carried out by Renault, thus making it even better. The fourth generation was critically acclaimed and commercially successful and is universally recognized as one of the best in the segment. A unique thing about the model is that it is mostly built from recyclable materials. Last month it was revealed that a fifth generation ‘Espace’ is making its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. With the new generation model, Renault looks to reinvent the popular family vehicle. The new model has been given a higher crossover like stance. Renault will be offering two variants a seven seater and a five seater. The cabin now features even more space and I s very passenger friendly. Renault has developed the vehicle with trademark precision and an attention to detail. The reason the new MPV is more spacious than before is that a newly developed modular CFM1 automobile platform has been used. With its debut at the Paris Motor Show, Renault released more details.

The ‘Espace’ does not look like a MPV but it is more dynamic like a crossover. The assertive front fascia is highlighted by a four bar grille, full LED headlights and daytime lights that have been placed in a signature style. The side of the car is dominated with pronounced wheel arches that can hold wheels of 17 inches to 20 inches. The surrounding area of the windows have been given chrome treatment. Another highlight is the panoramic windscreen (2.8 square meter). Panoramic roof is also available optionally. The rear design is no less striking than the front. The highlight is definitely the tail lights that have been given generous dimensions. The entire appearance has been a brush stroke like pattern. The dimensions are as follows- length of 4.85 meters, width of 1.87 meters , a wheelbase of 2.88 meters

One of the key features of the interior is the floating console that holds all the important controls. The interior has a high-tech feel often found in higher segment vehicles. This effect comes because of four decorative trim options and a vertically positioned display that is 8.7 inches in size and works through a standard R-Link 2 infotainment system. The traditional dials have been replaced with a TFT screen with high resolution. The comfortable seats come with 10-way adjustment facility. In another great addition, Renault’s long time partner BOSE has given the ‘Espace’ a specially tailored 12-speaker sound system. There is also ambient lighting for added experience. There is also a host of safety and driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, rear view camera, hill start assist.

There are three main engine options available for the new ‘Espace’.

1.6 liter dCi twin turbo engine with 160hp power and 380 Nm torque. Then there is another dCi 1.6 liter with 130hp and 320 Nm. The most powerful engine is the 1.6 liter TCe with 200hp and 260 Nm.
