Czech car maker Skoda was originally found in 1895 under a different name. In 1925 Skoda industrial group acquired the company to establish an automobile division and gave it the name Skoda Auto. In 2000, Skoda became a part of the Volkswagen group. Initially a company limited in the European market, Skoda has spread in markets like India and China. The inclusion with Volkswagen has helped the company as it has access to VW’s technologies. There are multiple models of Skoda that has been able to impress car buyers and critics as well. One such model is the super-mini car ‘Skoda Fabia’ that is one of the best selling Skoda models of all time. the production of the ‘Fabia’ first began in 1999 and the third generation model will have its launch at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October. The model is available in three body styles and the estate is known as ‘Fabia Combi’. The Combi variant has been very successful for Skoda as more than 1.1 million units have been sold till 2014. The good run of the estate variant is expected to continue with the launch of the third generation ‘Combi’. Skoda’s CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland has described the model as a great combination of emotional design, space and functionality. He feels that the model is a great representative of Skoda’s brand value and now that it is packed with modern technology , it is even better. With perhaps the highest interior space in its segment, the good run of the ‘Fabia Combi’ is likely to continue after the sales start of the third generation from January of 2015. The makers have promised that the new generation will continue to have all the strengths of the original model and at the same time will feature comfort, safety and utility systems that are generally found in cars of higher segment.


The design of the car perfectly reflects its functionality. The modern design language has resulted in a crisp design with precise body lines and very dynamic proportions. There has been some dimension changes in the car and it is now longer by 10 mm, wider by 90 mm. However the ground clearance is lower than 31 mm. The front fascia is identical with the hatchback variant and is marked by- slatted grille, wide, sharp headlights and bonnet with a prominent nose. New wheels designs are available for the new car. The rear is tidy and gives out a sense of strength. There are signature C-shaped tail lights.

The new model has been fitted with advanced Mirrorlink infotainment system that also comes with the SmartGate function that will allow the system to connect with a Smartphone or iPod and use a host of useful apps. There are very useful safety features like Emergency city braking function, speed limiter, driver fatigue detection, tire pressure monitor, parking sensors etc. In addition there are features like- power steering, large panoramic glass to enjoy outside view, touch screen based infotainment system, Rain sensing wipers etc.


The makers have made the new ‘Fabia Combi’ more eco friendly than ever. The fuel consumption of the car is almost 17 percent less than the outgoing second-generation model. Currently fuel consumption stands at 3.1 liter per 100 km while the CO2 emissions have come down to 82 grams per km. All this has been made possible by the use of Volkswagen’s advanced MQB technology. Customers will have the option of choosing from three diesel units and three petrol units. All the engines are compliant to EU6 emission level and are equipped with brake energy recovery system. The petrol engines have power output ranging from 75 PS to110 PS. On the other hand diesel units will offer power from 5 PS to 105 PS. The transmission options are manual or auto DSG gearboxes.
