Chevrolet has introduced 2016 Malibu that promises excellent technology from Chevrolet Volt. Buyers will have the choice of the following variants – L, LT, LS, Premier and Hybrid. The standard engine on the car is 1.5 liter Ecotec turbo that offers 37 mpg (highway). This engine features stop/start that has been introduced with Malibu. This facility improves efficiency in case of stop-and-go driving. This leads to an estimated 27 mpg for city and is an increase of 8% when compared to the current model. The car is suitable for highways as well since it possesses active grille shutters. They serve to bring down the aerodynamic drag and therefore enhance the efficiency.
A more efficient engine is the one that generates 160 HP and torque of 250 Nm. Another unit is the turbocharged 2.0 liter that is rated 250 HP and 350 Nm. The fuel economy in 2.0T amounts to 32 mpg for highway and 22 mpg for city. For the first time in GM’s front-wheel drive, eight-speed automatic transmission is being offered. The 1.5 liter turbo unit is accompanied by six-speed automatic transmission.
The new Malibu sports smart proportions as it is now longer by 91 mm as compared to the present Malibu. The length has been increased by 58 mm, while the width remains unchanged. Chevrolet’s exquisite designs can be very well seen in the exterior- sweeping and slim looking headlamps and the attractive dual-port grille. All the models flaunt attractive design cues. All of them have modern looking lighting technology, such as LED daytime running lamps for Premier and LT models. The taillamps too have LED technology. And all the cosmetic tweaks are paired with ingenious architecture that uses lightweight body construction. The creators have utilized high-strength steels to cut down the weight. Thinner components have been used for some parts and this has resulted in a good crash performance while keeping the weight low at the same time. Thanks to the careful engineering, the car weighs less than 136 kg as compared to its predecessor.
The improvement in wheelbase offers more legroom- better by 33 mm. Chevrolet MyLink features a color touchscreen. This 7-inch-diagonal capacitive screen is being offered as a standard feature on LT, LS and Hybrid trims. While customers opting for Premier will have the privilege of capacitive 8-inch-diagonal touchscreen. This feature is optional for the Hybrid and LT.
Navigation is present with MyLink 8-inch system. This cool feature offers 3D views maps for major attractions and cities of USA. Chevrolet has introduced a new feature called Teen Driver with which the parents can place restrictions on some vehicle functions for child’s safety purposes. The driving statistics like warming alerts and maximum speed can be viewed by parents. OnStar with 4G LTE offers Wi-Fi hotspot as the standard for all the models and comes with 3 GB/three month data trial – whatever is reached first. Also, occupants of Premier can enjoy even wireless phone charging as standard, while it is optional on Hybrid and LT trims. Dual USB ports have been incorporated for the rear seats along with power outlet of 110 volts – standard for Premier and optional for LT. The center stack of the instrument panel is new. The car makers have focused on climate controls and infotainment system so that the operation is utmost easy.
The center console and instrument panel are adorned in satin chrome accents. For the first time, Malibu gets ventilated seats and these are standard for the Premier trim. Another feature that this trim gets as standard is perforated leather seating; this feature is optional in Hybrid and LT. Additionally, customers get storage slots to keep their mobile phones. The slot can be equipped for wireless charging.
