Chevrolet’s 2016 Spark sports brand new design, utmost refinement and great functionality at the same time with novel connectivity and safety features. This new launch would be offered in over 40 markets across the globe. The car’s longer wheelbase gives it a slim look. Spark sits 40 mm lower as compared to the present model. The reduction in height has reduced the aerodynamic drag for enhancing the car’s efficiency. The architecture is yet another new aspect. The sturdy build of this model lets the drivers have a refined driving experience. With more robust body structure, the engineers have tuned the handling and ride in a more precise manner. This ensures that the drivers have better control over the vehicle and it promotes a quieter ride as well.
With the roof height being lower, Spark stands out very well amongst the other minicars that have upright look. The body of the car is shrink-wrapped. The wheels have been pushed to edges of fenders. The front features dual-port grille – the signature grille of Chevrolet. It is accompanied on either side by elliptical and large headlamps. These have a swept back appearance towards the car’s front fenders. The intricate appearance of the headlamps is an eye-grabber.
The car makers once again ensure that customers get the perfect shades in the interior. Three new colors have been added – Splash, Kalamata and Toasted Marshmallow. As for the comfort, the foam used for the seat is a high-density one. Instrument panel has been blessed with fresh looks. It includes an advanced LCD display. The center stack is prominent for controls of climate system and also for the infotainment system. Color-matched décors have been used to give the instrument panel smart looks. A new addition is the air outlets that are trapezoidal in shape, rather than round – as in the preset model.
The car is equipped with MyLink radio. The color display uses capacitive-touch and has an interface similar to modern devices like smartphones. Moreover, it provides very smooth gestures like pinching and swiping for easy and quick operation. The physical buttons and volume control ensure easy operation for the users. OnStar 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot are present to enhance connectivity. With this, passengers and drivers get mobile hub so as to remain connected. The car’s hotspot would stay on as long as the car is on.
2016 Spark runs on the new unit 1.4 liter which is a member of Ecotec small-displacement engines by GM. The engine is rated 98 HP- which is an enhancement in power by 16% as compared with the present model. The engine has aluminum used for cylinder block as well as head. This helps in reducing the mass so as to improve the efficiency. Integrated exhaust manifold too is present in the cylinder head. The driving experience becomes more responsive with this significant updation. Also added to enhance the engine’s performance is the piston rings that are low-friction. The friction is reduced even more, by use of better oil pump and camshaft – again both of which are low friction. The engine can be mated to dual-range CVT or five-speed manual transmission.
2015 Spark has received acclaim as Top Safety Pick by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Now Chevrolet wants the new Spark 2016 to do even better in this area. The company has focused on a giving a rigid body structure to the car. This is accompanied by a wide range of safety features. The car comes with ten airbags – knee air bags for the driver and front passenger, pelvic/ thorax air bags that are seat-mounted and also roof rail side air bags.
