There are a handful of automakers making motorcycles these days: Honda, Suzuki, Peugeot, and of course BMW. That’s about the extent of it, but the latter’s German rivals won’t be letting the Bavarian automaker keep the market all to itself for much longer. At least, not according to a recent round of rumors.
Late last year at the EICMA Show in Milan, BMW showed off a unique concept motorcycle powered by a six cylinder engine. At the time, the German company indicated that we could expect to see a production machine using a similar straight-six powerplant. Today, BMW has finally released a bunch of information on two upcoming production machines, which will be known as the K 1600 GT and GTL.
When we first caught sight of Roy Miller on his shiny new Ducati, sporting that great hair, some solid leather heals and a denim shirt rolled up just enough to let the world now that he means business, we’re not going to lie, a little bit of jealously came out of nowhere and smacked us in the face. Hey, he even has June Havens clinging tight for safety… its enough to make any man rush out and buy a new Hypermotard, right? Ducati certainly hopes so!
When Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta first announced the 2010 Brutale, there were some who questioned whether it was rational for MV to attempt an update that made the bike less, ahem… brutal. We decided it would be best to wait and see the bike in person and live with it for a while before making any such judgments – particularly since judging a vehicle solely by its spec sheet almost never has any real merit. And we’re certainly glad that we did.
In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s a new crop of superbikes terrorizing the roadways and racetracks of the United States. And more than any other point in recent history, the Big Four Japanese brands aren’t leading the way. Instead, it’s the European brands – Specifically Aprilia, BMW, KTM and MV Agusta – that are encroaching on Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha’s territory.
